We went to a bday party of another allergic child yesterday. The kids had such fun playing together and it was no nice not to worry like we do when we go to other parties. His Mom served water and the cake and cookies were free of the top 8 allergens. All the kids loved the taste! This was the 1st time I didn't bring my allergy free food with me to a party in 8 years. My allergic child was so happy! That's what it's all about at the end of the day. Happy and Safe!

We finally got good health insurance for our son. We do fight on a weekly basis for things. We are approved to take our son to CHOP Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (Center for Pediatric Eosinophilic Disorders). My son is now 4 and is not on steroids. We are trying to control his ee by eliminating his food triggers. Unfortunately, he hasn't passed any foods yet, but we are still hopeful and aren't ready to give in to steroids. He gets Neocate One Plus through his Gtube and that has literally been his life saver. We too will probably need a feeding therapist at one point. He has built up aversions due to being so sick in the past. Rachel, I am on Long Island. Let's get together.

FOR INGRID.... Just by reading what you wrote it does sound like your child has one of the eosinophilic disorders. Jay would vomite so bad he'd vomit the bottle we gave him from the morning it would lay in his stomach for hours! Go to a gastroenterologist and get an endoscopy done. Your child can also get full medicade. My son has medicade and they pay for just about everything! They wont pay for travel costs and you have to fight to go out of state but it's worth it. For kids with any eosinophilic disorder it's a long road for them. There is no cure and there is no guarentee that in 20 years their esophagus with be okay. From what i understand is at 5 years old when they are testd again for allergies that will show if the child will have an eosinophilic disorder for the rest of their lives. I've given up hope that Johnathan will get better he's 2 now and i dont see any signs of him getting better! Keep your head up I know it's hard! Believe me I'm in the same posistion. It's a fight to get anything for these kids but if more people come forward and talk we can all work together to make things right

Johnathan has EE. Im not sure of how many people on here have children with EE but all of the families I know are out of NY period. I would love to know if someone lives closer. My son goes to LIJ but I don't think he is getting the best care. J is allergic to Milk, Wheat, Soy, corn, potatoes, rice, shellfish, Eggs, dust mites, rag weed, And there maybe more because he hasnt been tested for other things. I tried to get Early Intervention for him. New York State denied him! He isn't slow so they kept denying him. They have recognized that he does need a feeding therapist though. No one else takes the insurance and we've been in this position for a year now. Johnathan is on Peptamen Jr now. His doctor had him on pediasure which was pure milk and she really messed up! Peptamen still has milk and i continue to fight to have him taken off of it. Just today we had to introduce the steroids. He hates it and spit it out thinking that would make it go away. My son needs so much help if anyone out there knows how i can fight the state please let me know.

Hi Lisa, Your request to state his care clearly is totally reasonable. The aide needs to shadow him when he is around food. See the sample IHP on the Resource page. A 1:1 aide is there to prevent a reaction from occuring. Food is sometimes used in learning as well as snack/lunch and holiday/bday. Don't sign anything you do not agree to. Please feel free to call me to discuss this further at 631/836- 3004. You may need to request another CSE meeting to straighten this out.

If anyone could share their opinion on the following matter, I'd really appreciate it. My 5 year old will be starting kindergarten in September. He has multiple food allergies and I have requested an aide for him during snack, lunch and recess (His allergist also wrote a letter to the school recommending this). He already has an IEP for speech and language services, and the distrct is going to add the monitor onto his IEP. However, the principal doesn't see it necessary for the aide to be listed as a 1:1 aide, rather it would just be the classroom aide that stays with his class all day already. I really wanted it to be put in writing that the aide would be responsible for MY SON ONLY during snack, lunch and recess. Am I being "overprotective" or unreasonable for requesting this?

Recently someone posted a message about a successful trip at Disney. I too went there 3 times and had the most wonderful experience. The restaurants really cater to people with food allergies. This was up until our trip last year. We ate at a Disney restaurant and sat down with the chef 2 times prior to plan my child's meal. So the 3rd time at this restaurant with the same chef, we felt comfortable that he knew what he was doing. My child took one bite of the meal and had an anaphylactic reaction. I was so upset because this hasn't happened in years. You are never prepared for these moments emotionally. Turns out the chef lied to us about the food preparation. The chef served a frozen meal and never looked at the ingredients on the back. The front of the box said "dairy free" (which is legal BTW). He told us he was making the meal from scratch. Lesson learned -- NEVER get comfortable with anyone preparing your child's meal and insist to see ALL labels. My best to all of you!

Thank you so much for your responses regarding traveling to the in-laws. It is sad that it has to be that way as I could send him to my parents without a worry because they are diligent and would ask if they had ANY concern. When my son has had a reaction to something my mother-in-law gave him, she has acted like there was something wrong with my son (like he was looking for attention) and with me. I feel that if she does not take the food seriously, she will not give him his medicine quickly or correctly if he has a reaction (and that's a big responsibility to leave with a 10-year-old). Only he knows exactly how it feels (a throat/stomach reaction that responds to Benadryl) and at this age, I immediately respond when has 'that feeling'. Also, while we have never (thankfully) ended up in the ER and he has outgrown other allergens, I do keep an EpiPen on hand just in case something changes. I REALLY appreciate your input! I discussed it with my husband this morning and while it didn't go great, he is listening. Thanks for what you are doing - I wish I lived close and could get involved. It's a great organization!

Hi Gail P, I went to Calgary, Canada for two weeks last summer with my very allergic daughter. We actually shipped boxes of food to our destination and packed food in our suitcases. Here is a link to an allergy group in Canada that may be able to help you find out info for the Montreal area http://www.calgaryallergy.ca/index.html I'm sure there must be an allergy group in Montreal that can help you. One PAK member said they filled a suitcase with the freezer bags/soft coolers and frozen/cold foods w/freezer packs. At least that way, you can bring food that you know is safe. I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip to Montreal!

Tracy- You are not crazy-I think our parents (our inlaws) do not understand food allergies as much as our generation. It is extremely hard for them to realize. I do not blame you for not wanting your child to go to your inlaws if she is just not "getting it". You have to do what is best for you & your kids even if that means hurting your inlaws feelings. Better safe than sorry.

  Wednesday, 6/25/08, 1:05 PM

Hi Tracy, you are not crazy! It's one thing if you your kids could take care of themselves. You are their mother and are entitled to your feelings. Personally, I would wait till the kids are older and can be their own advocate. Their grandparents need to understand that your child's food allergies are serious, even if it isn't life threatening. The only way I would let them go is if I sent them with the food they are allowed to eat (not a shopping list). Good luck with your decision and take care.

Tracy Wednesday, 6/25/08, 9:37 AM

Hi, I just found your website and although my child's allergies are not life-threatening, I would love your opinion on something. My mother-in-law has repeatedly given my son food with allergens over the past 10 years (breakfast pizza, ice cream sandwiches, mayonnaise) when my husband or I were nearby to intercept the food or give medication. Now my husband wants to send the kids to Ohio (20 hours away) without either one of us. If she was diligent about it, I might consider it, but sometimes I wonder if she remembers the allergies at all. (After 10 years, you have to wonder). I just feel that even though my son is getting good at reading labels and I would provide a list of what to buy, that it is still too great of a risk. She will still most likely cook the way she is used to. I do not want to upset my husband or offend his parents, but I really feel that after missing the mark so many times, I simply cannot trust that she will get it right. And, being so far away, I could not help him if she caused a reaction. I would value the opinion of someone else who lives this. Am I being crazy or selfish to say no? Thanks so much!

ADA Amendments Act Join us for National Call-In Day! Tomorrow marks the 17th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This law was designed to protect the rights of people with disabilities, specifically in the workplace. Unfortunately, over the last 17 years, the courts have narrowed the definition of "disability;" today, people with asthma and allergies who manage their symptoms are considered "too functional" to claim asthma and allergies as a disability. The good news is that the ADA Amendments Act (H.R. 3195) restores the comprehensive protections of this law. As such, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) asks that you join employers and patients by supporting this important legislation today, before a likely vote in the U.S. House of Representatives tomorrow. We urge you to take a moment and call your Congressman today via the Capitol switchboard, (202) 224-3121, and ask him or her to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Amendments Act (H.R. 3195). Please ask him or her to pass H.R. 3195 without additional amendments and provide workers the right to be free from workplace discrimination based on disability. You can find your local House member by visiting www.congress.org . The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is at the forefront of this movement to pass the ADA Amendments Act. Our motivation is simple: we want the 60 million people who live with asthma and allergies to live a life without limits - in the work environment and outside of it - with no exceptions. Imagine walking into your office and being overpowered by cigarette smoke or the scent of a strong perfume. Your lungs tighten, and your breath becomes increasingly short. Without the provisions provided by the ADA Amendments Act, your workplace is not required to take the measures necessary to optimize your health and safety. Moreover, without the protections of the ADA Amendments Act, your workplace could have the power to fire you rather than the responsibility to accommodate your disability. On behalf of the 60 million people living with asthma and allergies, please take action today! Join AAFA in support of H.R. 3195 by calling your representative in Congress, urging him or her to support the ADA Amendments Act, or H.R. 3195. Tomorrow, AAFA will be on Capitol Hill to fight for every asthma and allergy patient. Today, AAFA needs you to contact your legislator to ensure he/she joins us in this battle. Everyone is impacted by disability, and everyone has the right to live a life without limits. Sincerely, Bill McLin President and CEO

Hi Ingrid, Thanks for sharing your story. I am sorry it is so hard right now, but soon you will get to Pittsburgh and finally get some answers. As for no family support, I am sorry for that too. Go online and come here and other yahoo groups. You are not alone. My son is anaphylactic to beef, chicken, turkey, garlic, mustard, soy, lamb, eggs, peanuts, treenuts. I never heard of these kinds of allergies either. It takes people time to absorb the info. If and when you get an eos diagnosis, by the way, it can only be diagnosed by biopsy through endoscopy, you should also look for a local support group and surround yourself with these people. It doesn't have to be eos, food allergy people will have a better chance at getting what you are going through than your family. However, continue to educate your family and give them copies of "Emily's Story" and "Sabrina's". You can download them from our site. Good luck and push hard to get to Pittsburgh soon. You must be persistent to find answers.

The speakers at the June PAK meeting were very informative. It came at a perfect time for us as we were having our school meeting that week. schools will not get rid of peanuts or cheese becasue it is free from the government. Also= - many parents would not allow the school to limit the diet. Not even all "allergy" parents agree to not have nuts in their home. Forget about everyone agreeing on not having them at school. it is an unrealistic exectation. As parents we need the support of the administation. I think that would help. Becoming a PTA person helps I am sure. I tell my story about my son to any one who will listen....

PART 3: (sorry about this my story is long): The scary part has been that our insurance is going to be running out at the end of July. The city of Syracuse made me sign the letter saying I quit and guarantee me unemployment on the day I was fired, but now are denying it. So with no money coming in and the insurance coming to an end. Patrick continues to get sicker and sicker. All I can do is hold him. The hardest part is the unsupportive family. Like the questions ¿How can you be sure that he is allergic to Beef, no one can be allergic to Beef? I have never heard of such a thing before¿¿ My family thinks that is they just feed Patrick more that he will not continue to loss weight or be sick. However for the moment I guess that is fine in their minds, but for Patrick later on it makes him so sick. So to this day Patrick continues to lose weight, continues to get sick with Asthma and other illness. And we just wait for the call for Pittsburgh for the go ahead to go. Thank you for listening. Ingrid Spies Monday, 6/23/08, 7:34 AM

PART 2: Due to the fact that no one was helping me, except my son¿s Pediatrician I felt I had no choice to do the only thing I knew what to do. At the time Patrick had been diagnosed with being allergic to Milk, Soy, Oats, Corn, and Peanuts. He was refusing his formula and most food. So I felt until the official referral came in I would give him Pedacare, even though it said on the label contains a trace amount of Milk and Soy. Because at this time I did not know about food allergies a great deal as I do today. I only knew that he had these above allergies due to the fact of a blood test. Once I got the appointment for the doctors in Rochester, NY I was actually excited to get some answers. While the doctor was nice, she was short and to the point. She told me that I was doing everything wrong. That the Pedacare was making him sicker due to the fact that it had Milk and Soy in it. They told me that he should be on a totally Soy, Milk, Oat, Corn, Peanut free diet. Now the fight began to find a formula for Patrick to drink. The Rochester doctor gave me a new formula which to this day Patrick has not taken more than about three spoonfuls of it. They tell me to force him to drink it, but I think as parents we all know that there is not much you can force upon an almost two year old. They then put Patrick on Elecare which at the time he also hated, but has grown to like. Thank god that has been our only saving grace. They then said for us to try Rice milk. I asked over and over again are you sure that he will not be allergic to this, because he is allergic to Soy and cow¿s milk. They said it was extremely rare for a child to be allergic to rice milk. But then guess what when we went to have Patrick tested at the allergist, he was allergic to Rice milk and BEEF. My family still to this day does not believe that anybody could be allergic to Beef due to the fact that they had never heard of such a thing. We have been back to see the Rochester doctor twice and still she is evasive towards my family. She claims that we are not trying hard enough to get Patrick to eat or drink the formula we need him to. It was at this point that I went back to Syracuse and talk to Patrick¿s Pediatrician and she said ¿why don¿t I call her¿. So I let her and she was also not impressed. So she is now sending us to where her husband did his fellowship, Pittsburgh PA Children¿s Hospital. It was suppose to happen when I got out of school for the year, but then I got let go from my job. Since then it has been like an impending doom waiting to happen. We are now just waiting for a conference call to happen between the doctors of Pittsburgh and Patrick¿s Pediatrician, so when Patrick and I go down to Pittsburgh everything can be done at once since we are coming from so far away. Patrick¿s doctor thinks that he has Eosinophilic Disorders and should go on iv tube feeding most likely.

Ingrid Spies Monday, 6/23/08, 7:31 AM

My story is long so I am going to post it in two part. Thank you for your understanding. Hello everyone, my name is Ingrid Spies. I have a 21 month year old son named Patrick. He truly is the love of my life. For the love of my son even before he was born I went through numerous battles. I left his father due to a domestic violence situation. When I was pregnant with Patrick I was unable to hold any food down either way. Once Patrick was born I was happy that he was healthy due to the fact that I was so sick during my pregnancy. However, once we got home my troubles began. Since I was a single mother many said that I was upset and that Patrick was fine. However, Patrick had to be on 12 different formulas before we finally settled on Alimentum. That was fine, until the diarrhea hit. So we settled on Alimentum Ready to Feed, which has lees corn in it. Thank god for my Pediatrician. She discovered that he was allergic to corn, because there is more corn in the powered form of Alimentum than in the ready to feed formula. This began the fight with the W.I.C. program. Due to the fact that W.I.C. does not pay for ready to feed formula unless you are homeless. So I had to go to the state¿s commissioners to get his formula approved. About this time I went back to work at my overnight awake job. When my parents were taking care of Patrick during the night he was up all night. So they called me at work my first night back at work. It was then that they realized the seriousness of Patrick¿s issues. Often times the only thing that would settle Patrick¿s stomach was Pedalyte. Since birth Patrick would lose weight on a regular basis and would not gain for any apparent reason, or he would continue to get sick with Asthma or other related illness¿, Patrick was than diagnosed with acid reflux and numerous ear infections. The ear infections were no problems to fix. I called up my old ENT and tubes were put in his ears. I started going to a stomach doctor in the Syracuse area that I loved, however she was just a PA in the practice, things were going great until she went on maternity leave. Each time I had an office visit at this doctor¿s office they would put a pick line down Patrick¿s nose. Which was resulting in me holding Patrick down for an hour or two each time to just get the tube down his nose. Each visit was getting harder and harder, especially when I had to see the doctor doctor¿s of the practice. The last straw was when the doctor of that practice said Patrick¿s food issues were partly my fault. That they reason he was not eating was due to me and that maybe I had Munchausen Syndrome. Since I had a degree in Criminal Justice and had started working for the Syracuse City School District and my new health insurance was better I choose to find a new doctor, especially since his food issues increased once he turned one. Once he did turn one, as recommended we started him on Milk in the bottled. It went fine but this is when he started to go downhill fast. So I figured that he might be allergic to Milk, so at first I was the one that diagnosed Patrick¿s Milk allergy. We than started him on Soy Milk, but that was like a volcano hitting his stomach. Since he was going downhill so fast my search began for a new doctor. I called my insurance company and they told me the names of the doctors that my new insurance covered. They gave me the choice to either go to Rochester, NY or Albany, NY. I knew that this would be a huge risk going away, due to the fact that with my new job I was on probation the first year and if I missed a great deal of work I could lose my job. I however was seeing my son getting sick before my eyes. Due to the fact that no one was helping me, except my son¿s Pediatrician I felt I had no choice to do the only thing I knew what to

Denise, A school can recommend that a child not bring nuts or nut products to school but it cannot guarantee a peanut free school due to the fact that peanuts, shells and peanut oils, etc. are hidden in so many products that kids have come to love. Therefore, schools cannot guarantee that the school is peanut free. Does that help?

Regarding American Airlines lawsuit. There is one site that comes up pretty high on the search (like 5th) that is only filled with nasty stuff. Does anyone know if there is a NY State law that a school can not tell parents no nuts for snack time or no tree nuts or milk ect. Only the school can ask them to not bring in these items in hopes that the parents do not. I've had pre-schools tell parents no nuts at all and check the snack items and not serve them if these items are on the packaging but my child's new school for kindergarten states they can not tell parents no for snack time just hope they consider the child with any one of these allergies. I'm confused...but I think it's all with the school's policies they develop and how they want to handle it...maybe I'm wrong!!!
